An underground fire-main network at an electronics manufacturing facility in Penang was investigated over two night-time sessions. The work combined system-pressure review, magnetic noise logging, field-data comparison and ground acoustic checks under continuous industrial background noise. The available evidence did not support one reliable excavation point.

Case Overview
LeakPinpoint was asked to investigate an underground fire-main network serving an electronics manufacturing facility in Penang. The work took place over two night-time sessions so that pressure behaviour, accessible hydrant and valve points, magnetic noise logging and ground acoustic observations could be compared under the conditions available on site.
The investigation focused on gathering supporting evidence and determining whether the observations converged on a location suitable for controlled excavation.

Reported System Condition
The underground fire-main network was referred for specialist investigation. Available system information and fire-system pressure behaviour were reviewed before field comparisons began.
Exact pressure values, pipeline dimensions, material, route length, burial depth and leak rate are not disclosed in this case study.

Initial System Review
The first stage was to understand the available system condition before interpreting field sound. Pressure behaviour and accessible fire-system components were reviewed together with the site information available at the time.

Why the Investigation Was Complex
Continuous industrial background noise affected the comparison process. The underground network also had to be assessed through the hydrant, valve and surface points that were accessible during each session.
A stronger observation at one point was not treated as proof by itself. The investigation required repeatable supporting evidence from the system behaviour, monitoring points and ground acoustic comparisons.

First Night — Network Monitoring and Acoustic Comparison
During the first night, ground acoustic comparisons were carried out at multiple accessible points. The purpose was to establish whether the observations formed a repeatable pattern across the network, not to select a location from one isolated sound.

Magnetic Noise Logging at Hydrant and Valve Points
Magnetic noise logging was used at selected accessible hydrant and valve points to support comparison across the underground fire-main network. The logger shown below was mounted on a hydrant valve; the photograph does not establish a leak location or a confirmed signal result.

On-Site Data Review
Recorded field information was reviewed on site before the next comparison stage. This allowed the observations from different accessible points to be considered together rather than interpreted in isolation.

Hydrant Operation and System Preparation
An accessible hydrant point was operated as part of the preparation and comparison process. This activity supported the field assessment; it was not treated as proof of a leak location.

Second Night — Repeat Acoustic Comparison
The second night focused on repeating comparisons at selected accessible points. The purpose was to determine whether earlier observations could be reproduced under the available site conditions.

How the Evidence Was Interpreted
Results from both nights were compared before deciding whether there was enough consistent evidence to mark a location. Acoustic observations, logger results and system behaviour were considered together, along with the background noise and the accessible comparison points.
No single reading or instrument result was used on its own to decide where to excavate.

Why No Excavation Point Was Issued
A location was not marked simply because one point or one reading appeared stronger. Without enough repeatable supporting evidence, marking a location could have led to unnecessary excavation, cost and disruption.
The second-night result remained inconclusive, so the investigation stopped without presenting an excavation-ready point.

Final Outcome
After two night-time investigation sessions, the results still did not point consistently to one location for excavation. The investigation was therefore recorded as inconclusive under the site conditions at the time, and no unsupported leak-point marking was issued.

Scope and Limitations
Findings were based on the site conditions, access and evidence available during the two investigation sessions. Continuous industrial background noise and the available access points affected the comparison process.
