Case Overview

The investigation was carried out at an institutional complex in Putrajaya. The pipeline was approximately 100 mm HDPE and was believed to be buried about 2 metres below ground. LeakPinpoint’s work covered underground investigation and marking of the suspected area for excavation.

Initial Site Condition

An earlier shallow opening showed visible water but did not expose the actual damaged section. The pipeline remained substantially deeper than the opening.

Why Visible Water Did Not Confirm the Failure Point

Water escaping from a buried pipe can travel through soil or backfill before appearing at the surface. Because of this, the place where water becomes visible may be some distance from the damaged section.

For a deep pipeline, visible water alone is not enough to confirm the failure point. The actual pipe condition can only be confirmed after excavation.

Investigation Approach

A more detailed underground pipeline investigation was carried out after the earlier opening did not expose the failure point.

  1. Review the site condition. Available site information, the earlier opening and accessible test points were reviewed together.
  2. Compare multiple points. Readings and observations from different accessible points were compared to narrow the suspected area.
  3. Mark the suspected area. Once the evidence was sufficiently consistent, the suspected area was marked for controlled excavation by the appointed contractor.

Progressive Area Narrowing

Readings and site observations from accessible points were compared until the suspected area could be narrowed down. Pipe material, burial depth, pressure, soil conditions, access and background noise were taken into account.

Suspected Location Marking

After the available field evidence had been assessed, the suspected area was marked to guide controlled excavation by the appointed contractor.

The mark showed the area where physical confirmation should begin. The exact pipe condition and repair scope were confirmed only after the pipe was exposed.

Excavation Confirmation

Subsequent excavation by the appointed contractor exposed the deeper pipeline and confirmed the damaged section. The earlier shallow opening and the confirmed point of failure were not the same location.

Scope and Limitations

Findings were based on the conditions and evidence available at the time of inspection. The marked area was used to guide excavation, while the exact pipe condition and repair requirements were confirmed after the pipe was exposed.

Excavation, repair, pipe replacement and reinstatement were handled separately by the appointed contractor or project team.
